Scholarship Application Requirements

This scholarship was created to honor the life and legacy of Aura Gutierrez-Sanchez, a remarkable woman who exemplified dedication to her community, an unwavering work ethic, the strength and resilience of a single mother, and a deep love for serving others. We are looking for high school seniors who embody similar qualities and demonstrate a commitment to personal growth, community involvement, and the well-being of others. The scholarship is also open to those who are struggling parents and are striving to overcome challenges while pursuing their educational goals.

 
Eligibility requirements

Must be a graduate from Horizonte Instruction and Training Center or attending any satellite sites.

· Must demonstrate academic gains; GPA of 2.5 or higher preferred.

· Must be planning to attend an accredited college, university, or vocational school in the fall following graduation.

· Applicant may also be a struggling parent who is working to balance education, parenting, and personal growth.

Application Materials Needed
  1. Completed Scholarship Application Form:
    • Provide your full name, contact information, high school details, and intended post-secondary plans.
  2. Personal Statement (500-800 words):
    • In your personal statement, explain why you are a good candidate for this scholarship by reflecting on the following:
    • How you have demonstrated a strong work ethic, resilience, or perseverance in your life, particularly in the face of challenges.
    • Your involvement in the community and any service-oriented activities or initiatives you have been a part of.
    • How you have balanced school, work, and personal responsibilities (especially as a parent, if applicable), and how you’ve worked to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
    • Any personal experiences you have had as a parent (if applicable), or how you have been inspired by women who embody these qualities of strength, love, and service.
  3. Recommendation Letters (2 required):
    • At least one letter should come from a teacher, mentor, or community leader who can speak to your character, work ethic, and contributions to your community.
    • The second letter may come from a personal or professional reference who can speak to your dedication, resilience, and positive influence in your environment.
  4. High School Transcript:
    • Submit your official transcript, showcasing your academic achievements and involvement in extracurricular activities.
  5. Community Involvement Documentation (Optional but encouraged):
    • Provide any documentation or details about your volunteer work, community service projects, or other contributions to society.
  6. Selection Criteria:
    • The selection committee will review all applications based on the following factors:
    • Demonstrated community involvement: Active participation in local organizations, volunteer efforts, or helping others in need.
    • Work ethic and resilience: Proven ability to overcome challenges and maintain focus on academic and personal goals.
    • Service to others: A strong passion for helping others, making a positive impact on the community, and fostering goodwill.
    • Personal Character: Positive attitude, integrity, and the ability to inspire and encourage others.
Award Information (Deadline May 9th, 2025):

The Aura Gutierrez-Sanchez Horizonte Scholarship will award funds to cover 100% of tuition, books, fees, and educational supplies at Salt Lake Community College or Salt Lake Technical College to a technical certificate and/or associate degree.
